Hand Cut Shingles

After removing the siding how excited we were to find hand cut decorative shingles under that old  siding. They covered the bay where the dining room is and they also covered a band around the turret.  Sadly none were left on the turret to know what exactly was there so I picked a standard design that was available at the time.  Turned out really nice I think.

BEFORE:

Luckily the bands on the bay were still left but in VERY bad shape.  Holes had been drilled in to blow in insulation at some point.  Since we didn't get to the shingles right away after taking the siding off the holes were left exposed inviting sparrows to make their homes in the side of my house eeek!   To replace the shingles in one by one and leave the good old ones in and take the bad ones out would have been impossible.  So we purchased new ceder square shingles and got to work (or should I say my dad got to work)  !

Template for the new and an old one:

After HAND cutting oh some 300 shingles, sanding each one and making sure they were all perfect by hand we began putting them up one by one.  It was a LONG process and it was  left my dad do most of it.  They of course all had to line up and have perfect spacing.  These were something one could not afford to screw up. After about a month of work they were finished and painted up.  Now here they are:

I'd say they turned out pretty well.  These should last the house another 130 years I reckon!
