Hamms Mansion

Hamms beer made from the land of sky blue waters was a Victorian mansion which many treasured.  Hamm established his brewery in the 1860s below the bluff and in the 1880s the children erected his mansion just above the brewery.  Here on the grounds parties and events were held for the family as well and the workers of the factory.  Sadly in 1954 the then vacant building was set ablaze by an arsonist and the once stunning mansion burnt to the ground.  Today a lovely park entitled Swede Hollow Park is here where all can enjoy the grounds.

  1. In looking at the heart-breaking burned-out mansion image, it appears that just the roof burned off. The floors below look fine; not even broken windows! How sad that the roof simply was not replaced.

    1. It probably could have been saved, but in those days it wasn't even a second thought. Heartbreaking. If only we had time machines.

  2. The mansion features in book "Swede Hollow"(2016), written by the swedish author Ola Larsmo. The book covers the lives of swedish immigrants who came to the area in the late nineteenth century.

    1. I'll have to check it out. I haven't read that book yet. Many thanks for the tip. The immigrants to Dayton's Bluff shaped and continue to influence this amazing neighborhood.
