Hi friends and greetings from warm and humid Minnesota. Today i got a bee in my bonnet to do a small project that doesn't really accomplish much, other than my desire to tinker. I have been wiring the house to put back the servant bells in each room. Little to no evidence existed where the buttons actually were, but I knew what I wanted for the dining room, a foot push button. There wasn't evidence in the floor of a push button, but some years ago, I got my hands on the cover plate of a floor button. No guts, just the cover plate dated 1909 with a patent. This cover plate sat in my collections for nearly 20 years. Caked in varnish, shellac and lots of junk but I could see it was nickle or silver from the back. I cleaned it all off, fairly easily with lacquer thinner and it came out a beautiful shiny silver. I needed to cut a 2" round hole, just enough to make the plate flush with the floor. Not trusting myself to make a perfectly round hole with a chisel, I took a 2" hole saw and cut just enough for the plate to sit flush and took my chisel to get the rest out. It fit perfectly. With no guts below it, I simply drilled a hole through so that I could run the wire of the actual foot button through the center to the basement with the rest of the bell wires. It now sits under thr carpet, a little lump to summon the maid. I still dont have the bell system hooked up, that will have to be done when the kitchen is done, but a small project that I dont have to worry, where the heck I put the cover plate and push button. Small hidden win for the day!
