You know how you just want to do a little something and by the end of it you're covered in sweat, dust and think to yourself "I'll only have to do this again in 1 year"? Well that's what happened today and yesterday. Two seemingly small project that take a lifetime which is why I'm begging for a live in maid like the old days. Today I just wanted to clean a little of the front windows from some bird presents turned into 5 hours, endless newspaper and lots of sweat equity. Cleaning the front windows and screens with over 60 pieces of glass was not what I initially signed up for but here we are and I just say they look dazzling.
I probably last did this a few years ago so it was time. Yesterday I tackled cleaning the c. 1915 wedding cake chandelier. With over 700 pieces and sometimes during washing they disconnect from their hook it makes a seeming easy project turn into 6+ hours. But I must also say it looks dazzling all cleaned up.
See why I need help?
Hello Matt, It is always a red-letter day when I turn on my computer and there is a post from you.
ReplyDeleteWashing glass is one of those projects (like waxing linoleum) that is tiresome, but very rewarding immediately after you have finished. One of my old houses had small panes of beveled glass all across the front (living room, vestibule, and dining room). The way they sparkled and cast little rainbow-spectra of light around the house was fascinating. Luckily, the panes were relatively clean when I moved in and remained so by the time I moved out, so I never had to wash them.
However, Taipei has tons of black dust, and my balcony doors are in the path of the rain, which is an almost daily event here. Consequently, the windows get so dirty they are hard to see through, and I have to wash them frequently. These doors are not much fun to wash, but at least they are not divided into small panes or parts!

p.s. Your hard work paid off. Your windows and chandelier are noticeably sparkling and beautiful. --Jim
ReplyDeleteThank you Jim for your encouragement. Your previous old house sounds lovely with all the small beveled glass but I know you feel my pain. My house is on a busy street so it's getting dirtier than I would like but at least I try.
